Ne|Mestnye (Not|local) is a laboratory school that organizes 50-minute guided tours, telling stories of notable people and historical houses of Khanty-Mansiysk from the past and the present. All you need to take part is such tours are a charged phone, headphones and access to the Internet. You can choose a route in the school's Telegram channel and click the "listen" button. Audio tracks are freely available: after the premier of a new tour, any person is free to play it again and explore the city at any time.
As part of the preparation process, members of the school collect all kinds of documentary materials: talk to neighbors and friends, look through old newspapers in the archives, share personal stories with each other. They also share stories about their special places in the city: where their parents bought them cotton candy, where they invited the girl to the first dance, where they sailed on rafts, sang, fell in love. The routes are then created in the form of plays, which are voiced by professional actors. So far, two plays have been released: "Ryba-lyubov'" ("Fish-love"), "Kogda derevya byli bolshimi" ("When the trees were bigger").
Nikita Dukhnik is a photographer. He has been doing photography for more than 15 years. He mostly shoots weddings, but does other types of photography, too. Such as street photography, which he does as a hobby. You can find hundreds of wedding and family photos on his social media. One thing to notice is that the background is always different, from the festively decorated halls of the Nizhny Novgorod Wedding Venues to the fields with haystacks.
Nikita also shoots aerial photography. "The Scream" entered the TOP-35 of the international 35AWARDS photo award in the nomination "Best Aerial Photography". The photo captures a body of water and is very reminiscent of Edvard Munch’s eponymous painting. This project raises awareness and support for the environment, and when it was taken in November 2020, it was not digitally processed. "The Scream" also won second place at the Russian Geographical Society’s "The Most Beautiful Country" contest in the nomination "Russia From a Bird’s Eye View".
Nizhegorodskaia Nav. Nachalo (Nizhny Novgorod Nav. The Beginning) is a book of local tales and legends, based on fictional understanding of historical events and urban legends. The book is rich in tales of the creatures of Slavic folklore: leshy, rusalkas, domovoys, vampires, werewolves, ghosts. Creatures that usually live in Nav, the realm of the dead, but sometimes can be seen in Yav, the realm of the living. They represent elements, phenomena, or groups of people that can be found in any city. In the course of the story, it becomes clear how they interact with each other.
The cover for the first edition was designed by Nizhny Novgorod designer Dmitry Kizaev. It was based on an engraving by Adam Olearius, a seventeenth-century German scholar, depicting Nizhny Novgorod. A number of urban role-playing games were inspired by this book, and now new stories and a new urban mythology are being born through them. The book was written by Cultural Studies teacher Olga Klever, and published in 2022.
