Namegarden is a public memorial built by artists Artem Filatov and Alexey Korsi on the grounds of a private crematorium in Nizhny Novgorod. The project deals with one of the foundations of human existence – the fear of death. The paradoxical intention - rapprochement with the object of fear - is often used as a tool for getting rid of fear. The artists, reflecting on the evolution of attitudes toward death in different eras, have established a space that suggests a new modus operandi for the subject of the sublime. This subject is interpreted by them as symbolic immortality as a form characteristic of the Anthropocene epoch.
Their concept refers to the culture of natural graves, the tradition of scattering ashes and eco-cemeteries. The project is conceived as a functioning botanical garden, designed to be continually transformed over time. The sound installation which is part of it is based on contemporary ritual forms, notions of corporeality and virtuality of memory.
